A tool in the design thinking toolbox.

Prototyping is about getting concrete. Abstract discussion and really making something are very different animals.

Your prototype can be really simple (a sketch on a whiteboard) or relatively involved (a semi-working rough implementation); the faster and simpler the better, especially at first. You might make multiple prototypes, each one more refined.

To Prototype, You Might

  • Combine, expand, and refine ideas
  • Create multiple drafts
  • Seek feedback from a diverse group of people (including people in your target audience)
  • Present a selection of ideas to the client or potential users
  • Reserve Judgment and maintain neutrality

On Feedback

It's a very good idea to have multiple prototypes when asking for feedback. Otherwise, people feel bad about saying negative things. But if you give them two choices, they will always say they like one more.
