A tool in the design thinking toolbox.

Brainstorming Rules

We want to generate as many ideas as possible. The rules are essential or it won't work:

  • Quantity over quality
  • Encourage crazy ideas
  • Build on other's ideas
  • Reserve judgment - generate don't evaluate
  • Be visual - quickly draw or prototype ideas
  • Number each idea as you add it on the whiteboard or equivalent
  • Record the session in writing afterword

Brainstorming Environment

The environment for brainstorming keeps it feeling lively and helps avoid slippage into "meeting mode." Some suggestions:

  • Have basic tools to be visual: markers, whiteboard, paper
  • Colored post-it notes are extremely useful
  • Have some food and drink in the room so you stay comfortable but don't need breaks
  • Don't drag it out too long
  • Have some wacky toys, like beach balls or nerf weapons or whatever you like. No matter how silly you feel, it will help. (Feeling silly is sort of the point.)
